WestJet Announces Unprecedented Increase in Air Service to YMM

The ‘Triple Crown’ of new destinations Las Vegas, Kelowna, and Vancouver to be launched this spring.

Fort McMurray, AB–(January 20, 2014) – WestJet announced this morning new air services to Fort McMurray including nonstop service to two new destinations Las Vegas and Kelowna as well as service to Vancouver.

This announcement marks a major investment in Fort McMurray by WestJet. Details of the new service announcement include:

·       Nonstop service to Las Vegas – Twice per week service departing Thursdays beginning June 24, 2014

·       Nonstop service to Kelowna – Daily service beginning May 12, 2014

·       Nonstop service to Vancouver – Daily service beginning May 12, 2014

“This is a significant endorsement by WestJet of Canada’s fastest growing airport. Announcing three new destinations at the same time is rare at Canadian airports and speaks volumes as to the commitment that WestJet is making to the community and region,” said Airport President & CEO Scott Clements. “This is a milestone announcement for WestJet and YMM. Each of these destinations provides travellers with additional convenience and more options when travelling within Canada or the US.

Las Vegas is the number one US leisure destination for travellers from Fort McMurray and offers prime departure and arrival times. WestJet will be offering nonstop flights twice per week departing to Las Vegas on Saturdays at 8:50 pm returning Tuesdays to Fort McMurray at 3:30 pm. WestJet is the number one Canadian carrier providing service to Las Vegas offering an attractive package of air, hotel and car rental reservations in association with WestJet vacations. “Nonstop service to Las Vegas has been the number one route request by residents. Whether passengers are travelling to Las Vegas for a fun weekend getaway or for business, WestJet now makes it faster and easier by flying nonstop and avoiding layovers at other Alberta airports,” said Clements.

A popular leisure destination, nonstop service to Kelowna and the Thompson-Okanagan region will provide residents with a premier year-round vacation destination. Access to golf courses, winery tours, beaches and ski hills will be a major attraction year round. WestJet will be offering nonstop daily service departing for Kelowna daily at 10:25pm and returning to Fort McMurray for 10:30am. The service will also provide convenient access to the Okanagan valley including Vernon, Penticton, and Osoyoos. “Linking Kelowna and Fort McMurray will be a huge benefit to both our regions,” said Clements. “This new air service with WestJet provides better business and tourism access to both our regions. This will considerably reduce the travel time to the entire Thompson-Okanagan valley. Residents of Fort McMurray have a special affinity towards the Okanagan Valley.”

Nonstop service to Vancouver offers an alternative when accessing Vancouver and the lower mainland. “While Vancouver has service with two flights currently, our research shows that the market has been underserved until now.” WestJet Service to Vancouver will depart daily at 11:00am and return to Fort McMurray at 4:50pm.

Existing services currently offered by WestJet from YMM were also improved with the announcement. Nonstop service to Toronto will be increased to seven days a week and Calgary and Edmonton will have an additional daily flight.
