Fort McMurray, AB – December 19, 2014 – Travellers at the Fort McMurray International Airport experienced travel delays this afternoon as Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a threat at the airport at approximately 12:30pm. As a precaution, the terminal building was evacuated.
In their news release, Wood Buffalo RCMP noted that “a lone male was arrested and is currently in custody for making comments in reference to a dangerous device. Threats made against the safety of an aircraft and/or its occupants are criminal code offences.” The RCMP reported that “it was determined that the public was in no danger during this incident.” An investigation is ongoing.
Passengers were allowed back in the terminal shortly before 2:00pm. Approximately 300 passengers on four flights were immediately impacted by this event, but cascading travel delays may occur. Passengers are advised to consult their airlines regarding any potential flight delays.
