Fort McMurray, AB – January 20, 2015 – The Fort McMurray Airport Authority is pleased to announce that over 1.3 million passengers travelled through the Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) in 2014. It remains the fastest growing airport in Canada with an annual growth rate of 9.5%.
“These record-breaking numbers demonstrate just how essential the opening of our new terminal building was to support our dynamic community. We are proud to see traffic through the Fort McMurray International Airport continue to expand at a rapid pace, and are pleased to be able to meet the air transportation needs of this vibrant region,” commented Scott Clements, President and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority.
Passenger Growth
In 2014, 1,308,416 commercial and charter passengers travelled into and out of Fort McMurray International Airport. In contrast, a total of 1,195,437 passengers passed through our airport in 2013. Our 2014 numbers represent a 9.5% increase over the previous year. The busiest month at the airport during 2014 was July, when 117,354 passengers travelled though our building. The dramatic growth of the airport meant that during 2014 it surpassed Regina International Airport (YQR) to become Canada’s fifteenth busiest airport.
Air Service Expansion
YMM was also able to expand its air service options in cooperation with its airline partners. WestJet introduced two new direct flights from Fort McMurray to Kelowna and Vancouver, and increased the number of direct flights from Fort McMurray to Calgary. Air Canada increased the number of direct flights to its existing destinations including Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver. Sunwing launched seasonal service to Cancun, Mexico as a sun destination for the winter months.
