June 26, 2026

Airport campus employees recognized for keeping Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo connected and moving forward

Fort McMurray, AB – The Fort McMurray Airport Authority (FMAA) proudly joined airport campus partners, community leaders and elected officials on Thursday to celebrate Airport Workers Day, recognizing the dedicated people whose hard work helps keep Canada connected.

The celebration brought together employees from across the YMM airport campus for a barbecue lunch, equipment displays, door prizes and a special proclamation from Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor Ty Brandt, on behalf of Mayor Sandy Bowman, officially declaring June 25 as Airport Workers Day in the region.

“Today is about celebrating the people who make our airport campus exceptional,” said Denean Robinson, President and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. “Whether you’re welcoming passengers, maintaining critical infrastructure, supporting aircraft operations or working behind the scenes, every role contributes to the success of our airport and our region.”

The YMM airport campus is home to more than 40 businesses and over 500 employees who work together every day to connect residents, businesses and visitors to the people, places and opportunities that matter most.

Guests also heard remarks from Lisa Sweet, CEO of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism, who spoke to the important role aviation plays in supporting tourism, attracting investment and strengthening the regional economy.

The impact of airport workers extends far beyond the airport campus. YMM contributes more than $290 million annually to the local economy and serves as a critical transportation hub for residents, industry, tourism and business travel.

Airport Workers Day is a national celebration recognizing the thousands of aviation professionals who work to ensure safe, reliable and efficient air travel. From customer service representatives and maintenance crews to airline employees, security screening officers, aircraft rescue and firefighting personnel and ground handling teams, these professionals play an essential role in keeping communities connected.

“Airports are powered by people,” added Robinson. “Today was an opportunity to pause, celebrate and thank the incredible individuals who bring professionalism, dedication and pride to their work every day. We are grateful for everything they do for YMM and for our region.”

The Fort McMurray Airport Authority extends its sincere appreciation to Burger King, Earls Kitchen + Bar, Councillor Ty Brandt, Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism, Travel Alberta and the airport campus partners who helped make the celebration possible.
