“One moment of pause can prevent a lifetime of consequences for yourself, and for others.”
At Fort McMurray Airport Authority, safety starts with a moment of awareness. Whether you’re in operations, administration, maintenance, or customer service, taking a moment to PAUSE helps ensure you’re physically ready, mentally focused, and situationally aware.
What PAUSE Stands For:
P – Prepare
Know the task hazards, the risk of those hazards, and the risk controls (e.g. tools, spotter, PPE, etc.) you need to do proper field level risk management. Review appropriate procedures or checklists if required or needed.
A – Assess
Scan your internal (mind & body) and external environments. Are there hazards? Is the weather, equipment, or condition of the area creating any new risks? What is your human factors risk profile at this moment? Will those environments change during the task?
U – Understand
Make sure you understand your role and the expectations. If something is unclear, ask the appropriate person.
S – Speak Up
If something looks or feels unsafe or an unacceptable risk, , say something. If you’re unsure, pause and get clarity. Risk management – safety, security, environmental, or otherwise – is everyone’s responsibility.
E – Execute
Only proceed once you’re confident risks are managed to the “acceptable level” according to our risk matrix.
