Keeping YMM Sparkling: Joel Perez, Our ‘Mr. Clean’

If you’re a frequent YMM flyer, you’ll easily recognize Joel Perez from Bill’s General Cleaning. His hard work has earned him a strong reputation and the affectionate nickname “Mr. Clean” from some passengers.

Originally from Mabalacat City in the Philippines, Joel has spent the past eight years creating a clean and welcoming environment in the YMM terminal.

“I love the people at the airport, and the passengers who come through again, and again. I see familiar faces who recognize me and thank me for my hard work. They tell me how clean the airport is. Regulars even call me ‘Mr. Clean of the Airport,’” he laughs.

But it’s no joke—Joel is always on the move, committed to making the passenger experience the best it can be. He’s been spotted on his knees, meticulously cleaning between the tiles to ensure every corner of the airport shines.

Beyond his work, Joel cherishes his role as a husband of 26 years and father of two adult children. With his immediate family in the city, he, like many other residents of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, travels regularly to visit loved ones in the Philippines each year. His last trip was in March, and he was joined by his 19-year-old son.

As for creating a home in Northern Alberta, Joel said he loves Fort McMurray for its quieter pace, finding peace in the community. When asked about seeing the northern lights for the first time, he said he didn’t know what they were, and that the colors reminded him of dancing. He shared he couldn’t believe they were real.

Joel’s dedication and warmth not only enhance the airport experience but also reflect the spirit of Team YMM. He’s a beloved figure in the terminal! Next time you fly YMM, give him a wave. We know he will wave back with a smile.
