Fort McMurray, AB – October 3, 2017 – The Fort McMurray Airport Authority (FMAA) has released the results of a 2016 Economic Impact Study, which was conducted by InterVISTAS Consulting Group. The study was commissioned by the FMAA to determine the economic impact of the Fort McMurray International Airport’s (YMM) operations in 2016.
“Airports are not successful on their own, communities make airports successful and airports can drive economic growth. This study looks at the vital role YMM Airport plays at creating and providing skilled jobs that contribute to our local economy,” said RJ Steenstra, President & CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. “We provide a vital transportation service to the region while our employees and businesses support our community’s economy and diversification.”
The study found that in 2016, the Fort McMurray International Airport supported 900 skilled, well-paying direct jobs, generated $46 million in direct wages and produced $354 million in total economic output. The study also found that the Fort McMurray International Airport contributed $25 million in total tax revenues, $4 million of which was paid directly to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to help support the local economy.
In addition to the 2016 Economic Impact Study, a microstudy was also conducted to take a close look at how individual air services impact the Fort McMurray International Airport as well as the region.
The information gathered in both the 2016 Economic Impact Study and the microstudy, demonstrates that the Fort McMurray International Airport is a source of stable, year-round employment and a key economic contributor to the local community.
