Fort McMurray, AB (January 7, 2020) – The Fort McMurray Airport Authority is pleased to announce the recent appointment of RJ Steenstra, President and CEO of the Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) to the position of Vice Chair, Canadian Airports Council (CAC) Board of Directors. Mr. Steenstra succeeds Joyce Carter, President and CEO of Halifax International Airport Authority, who assumes the role of CAC Chair.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Steenstra served as CAC Regional Director (Central), where he championed industry priorities and echoed the voice of Canada’s regional airports through the CAC Small Airport Caucus.
“It has been an honour and privilege working alongside some of the very best in the airport industry,” says RJ Steenstra, President and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. “Moving into the Vice Chair role, my focus will be on evolving our governance model and ensure the industry continues to be positioned to tackle emerging issues and opportunities facing airports across Canada, including regional airports such as YMM.”
Mr. Steenstra’s industry contributions have also included serving as Director for the American Association of Airport Executives – NW Chapter, Director of the International Civil Aviation Organization and Airports Council International (ACI) – World, Community of Practice and Vice Chair for the International Association of Airport Executives Canada. Mr. Steenstra is also currently serving as Board Director for ACI-North America, of which the CAC is a division. ACI-NA represents airports throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Locally, Mr. Steenstra is an active leader in the community committed to enhancing economic growth and quality of life services in the region. He is currently serving as Director on the inaugural Wood Buffalo Economic Corporation’s Board of Directors and member of the Livability Taskforce. In 2019, Mr. Steenstra served as Vice Chair of the 2022 Wood Buffalo Arctic Winter Games Bid Committee and Chair of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Committee.
