Susan Ubina, originally from North Luzon, Philippines, moved to Fort McMurray in 2007. Initially working as a nanny, she did not foresee a career in security. However, after obtaining her open work permit, Ubina explored various job opportunities and discovered her passion for the safety sector.
Her journey with GardaWorld Security began in 2012 for a company in the oilsands. She transitioned to Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) in 2017. Demonstrating remarkable dedication, she quickly advanced to a lead position in 2019 and became a supervisor in 2021, a role she continues to excel in today.
Ubina’s enthusiasm for her job is evident: “If they are happy, I am happy,” she said, reflecting her belief that helping people brings immense joy. Her transformation from preferring solitary work to thriving in a people-centric environment highlights her growth and adaptability.
Reflecting on her position, Susan said her favorite aspect is helping people. She recalls a memorable incident in January 2022 when she sensed something was wrong with a passenger. Taking the initiative, she called the RCMP to ensure the individual was not fit to fly—an experience that reinforced her commitment to passenger safety.
In her supervisory role, Ubina emphasizes the importance of customer service. She believes starting each day with a positive mindset is crucial, given the unpredictability of airport security. With a team of 22 full-time and 10 part-time employees, she credits their collaborative spirit for making her job easier and more fulfilling.
“They are all very helpful,” she said. “Everyone is a team player!”
