NAV CANADA: Connecting with Aviation Leaders

We recently had the pleasure of visiting the CYMM Control Tower, where we connected with (left to right) John St. George, Rosie Jukosky, and Andrew Robertson. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with the NAV CANADA Air Traffic Controllers and catch up on the latest developments within their team.

At NAV CANADA, the backbone of our aviation industry, they provide essential services including air navigation services, publications for pilots, and innovative technology like space-based radar.

John emphasizes, “Our role is crucial in managing the safe, efficient flow of air traffic across Canada.”

In Fort McMurray, controllers operate under two categories: visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR). “As VFR controllers, we have the advantage of seeing the traffic we manage,” John explains. “This visibility is vital for ensuring safety at busy airports.”

NAV CANADA boasts 42 control towers and seven area control centres (ACCs) nationwide, where controllers coordinate air traffic across 18 million square kilometres of airspace. The application process for aspiring controllers is rigorous, with aptitude tests designed to assess their suitability for the demanding role.

“Training is thorough and demanding, which is essential for ensuring the safety of all flights,” John notes. At Fort McMurray Tower, eight dedicated controllers manage traffic, especially during the busy summer months when fire response efforts peak.

From supporting medical flights to managing local air traffic, NAV Canada plays a pivotal role in aviation safety, ensuring that every flight is a safe one. For more information about careers at NAV Canada, visit NAV CANADA Careers.
